José Corbacho and Catalina Solivellas met thirty years ago, sharing stages, dressing rooms, laughter and also some sorrow. That’s when they began to realize how therapeutic theatre can be in difficult times. Years later, and inspired by Don Quixote, they decided to put on a free version of the chivalric novel, together with amateur actors and actresses from Mallorca with a mental health diagnosis. The documentary proposes a journey in which José, Catalina and the wonderful company created for the occasion share stages, dressing rooms, laughter and also some tears.
My approach to “Places in the Mind” has been from an unprejudiced perspective on madness. I am interested in breaking down the boundary between what we call sanity and its opposite, and, as in Don Quixote, observing it as a form of freedom. From there, I conceived this documentary as a road movie that closely follows the creative process of the theatrical work, understanding the rehearsals and preparations as a journey towards a place we all intuit: the staging. The preparation is full of surreal situations, in a constant interplay between documentary and fiction that evokes Don Quixote, but transposed to the Mallorcan countryside. Having Catalina and Jose in front of the camera, along with my collaborator Joan Montserrat, has allowed me to explore that language, experimenting with fictionalized moments in settings ranging from beaches and windmills in Mallorca to the bowels of a theater.
